The Loglogic Chip Blowing System was developed for the removal of chipped vegetation on sites where transportation by any other means would be impractical or in some cases impossible. The system featured here is for removing chipped scrub on a Fen restoration project in Norfolk, where the conditions are such, that more than two passes with a low ground pressure tracked machine causes irreparable damage to the very habitat they are trying to restore.
A Loglogic Chip Blowing System comprises of a diesel powered Compressor Module, normally situated on a hard standing, up to 300m from the chipping operation, supplying air via a 150mm flexible pipe to the Chip Discharge Module. There the chipped material is metered from a reception hopper into a rotary valve and then blown up to 700m at up to 10 tonnes/hour to a bulk transport container or into another Chip Discharge Module to be blown another 700m, ad infinitum.
The advantage of the remote Compressor Module is that a minimal amount of equipment has to be carried by the mobile chipping unit, essential in very soft conditions where ground pressure and habitat damage are paramount.
The individual modules are designed to run unattended with automatic rotary valve jam detection and recovery, compressor and chip feed shutdown on discharge pipe blockage and continuous monitoring of chip feed rate and air velocity to maintain optimum chip feed rate in all conditions. All modules are linked by radio to allow remote monitoring, operation and shutdown.
The Compressor Module comprises of an 80kw Cummins diesel engine driving a triple lobe positive displacement rotary compressor, with intake and discharge silencers, hydraulic power take off, 200litre fuel tank and an engine monitoring system with automatic engine shutdown and radio link.
The Chip Discharge Module consists of a buffer bin, sized to match the peak output of the chipper, a variable speed metering auger and a rotary valve and discharge manifold. The rotary valve and metering auger are controlled by an integral control system allowing unattended operation with minimal human intervention. The control system continuously modulates the chip feed rate to maintain optimum chip feed rate in all conditions whilst minimizing the possibility of pipe blockage. The rotary valve and metering auger are also continuously monitored for jams or blockages, in the event of a blockage, or jam the control system will automatically attempt to remedy the situation but if this fails, will shut down the remote compressor via the radio link, stop the rotary valve and metering auger and relay the system status to the handheld monitoring unit to alert the operator of the problem.
The metering auger and Rotary valve are hydraulically powered, with the supply either coming from the hydraulic power take off on the Compressor Module or if mounted on a mobile system, from the onboard hydraulic s system.
